Summary

The Vice President, National Department is responsible for driving financial growth and increasing the number of NAM members by overseeing the direction, coordination, and evaluation of the National Department, a team of membership managers focused on retention, engagement, growth and new member sales in the small to mid-sized market.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Create and implement strategies to grow and develop a high performing team. Recruit and retain top sales talent.
  • Represent the NAM and the National Department effectively with internal and external audiences.
  • Develop innovative programs through partnerships with state and vertical associations to grow the organization's small and medium sized membership base.
  • Responsible for membership services, affinity programs, and marketing tools.
  • Establish and maintain relations with the c-suite executives and members of the NAM Board of Directors.
  • Create an agile and adaptive retention and sales model.
  • Leverage director and member leadership to assist with the sales process, and follow up accordingly.
  • Be able to communicate effectively and work collaboratively across all functions to support organizational objectives.
  • Assess and utilize market research to uncover growth opportunities.
  • Maintain departmental financial reports and handle presentations to senior staff on progress to goal while forecasting challenges and opportunities.
  • Some travel required.

Examples of Decision Making

On own authority: Hiring of key staff; general human resources actions; and approving office purchases and business expenses.

With approval by higher authority: Expenditures above $5,000; changes to commission structure; changes to division dues structure or category of prospect targets.

Type and Nature of Contacts

Internally: All levels of staff: to develop strategic goals for consideration by senior management; to coordinate activities and share information.

Externally: Member company CEOs to assist with sales/retention; SMM board members; representatives of other associations, etc. in the community to exchange ideas, etc.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the National Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Previous experience successfully managing sales staff is required.
  • Must be goal oriented with demonstrated success in achieving membership growth in both dollars and the number of members.
  • Must have a general understanding of the policy process and knowledge of legislative and regulatory issues in order to identify high potential emerging business and growth opportunities for new members.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Association peers & competitors.
  • Must be able to engage in teambuilding activities and be adept at motivating high levels of sales performance.
  • Outstanding communication skills are essential.
  • Must possess knowledge of database and spreadsheet software in addition to basic computer tools, and be able to communicate adequately in writing.
  • Must be able to handle pressure in a deadline driven environment.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's or graduate degree in business, marketing or other relevant discipline.
  • A minimum of eight to ten years in a direct sales and telephone sales environment.Experience with intangible selling.
  • Experience in association membership sales and retention as well as in developing external strategic alliances.
