Clock Is Ticking for Manufacturers

U.S. Job Creators Sit on the Sidelines as Competitors Forge New Trade Deals

Washington, D.C., May 14, 2015 Today, National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Vice President of International Economic Affairs Linda Dempsey released the following statement after the Senate vote to move to debate on Trade Promotion Authority (TPA). TPA is key to unlocking manufacturers’ potential to expand trade, compete globally and sustain and create good-paying jobs here in the United States:

“Today’s vote is an important step in the right direction for growing U.S. manufacturing and exports. Manufacturers are counting on policymakers to build on this momentum by setting aside politics and moving quickly to approve much-needed TPA legislation.

As trade opponents attempt to put up roadblocks, manufacturers in the United States are forced to sit on the sidelines as our competitors move forward with trade agreements to grow their economies that exclude and disadvantage our industries and workers.

Congress needs to approve TPA to restore U.S. trade leadership so that manufacturers have competitive access to the 95 percent of the world’s population and the more than 70 percent of the world’s purchasing power beyond our borders.”
